Days 22 & 23 - Fri 23rd & Sat 24th December, 2011

After 23 days, 9 flights, 6 States, 10 Schools, 30 Basketball games, 32 bus trips, numerous media reports, many College scouts, too many slices of pizza, endless litres of soda, hundreds of new facebook friends, countless broken hearts and fond memories to last a lifetime, we farewelled America as we returned home to the land down-under. Thank you to all our host schools for making our time in the US very special. Thank you to the parents for providing this opportunity for your son to grow and develop both as a basketballer and a young man. Most of all, thank you to the boys for being a credit to your family, your school, your country and yourselves.

Day 21 - Thursday 22nd December, 2011

On our final day in America the boys started the day by demonstrating an important skill that they have successfully learnt from traveling all the way to the other side of the world - discount shopping! With the little money they had left, they ensured every spare inch of space in their bags were filled.

After lunch we visited the 'Hollywood Walk of Fame' followed by a drive along Rodeo Drive, Beverley Hills. Next stop, sadly - LAX.

Day 20 - Wednesday 21st December, 2011

After a well-earned sleep-in and relaxing morning we headed north-east out of LA for our 10th and final game on tour against Rancho Cucamonga High School. On our arrival we were warmly greeted by the Head Coach, Bill Burke, and made to feel very welcome as we entered the school gym with "Welcome Trinity" and "Welcome Aussies" banners on the walls, and green and white balloons/streamers lining the stands and benches. The school is huge with over 3200 students in just Years 9 to 12 - the Basketball was going to be tough!

The fact that it was Day 20 showed for the Freshman team with the players taking a long time to find their rhythm and get into the game. Rancho penetrated well, dominated the rebounds and were deserved winners. However the final quarter for Trinity saw some of the best Freshman Basketball played on tour where our zone offence broke down the Rancho defence. Oscar Bradburn and Joel Giezekamp combined exceptionally well with the team scoring 23 points in the final period. Conor Karagiannis commented - "Fatigue hit us hard early which showed with our slow ball movement and speed. In the final quarter Coach White really inspired us to lift for our last period of Basketball in America. We were focussed and determined to give it our all." The quarter scores were: 8-14, 15-29, 26-51, 49-61.

In the Junior Varsity game there was plenty of solid ball movement from our boys which created opportunities to put points on the board. The boys continued to hustle right to the end but Rancho were too strong. Tim Kasalo had a superb game playing strong at the post, scoring some good points and was aggressive on the rebounds. Michael Liu also had a great outside game tonight, driving hard to the basket and nailing some good outside shots. Zac Curran commented - "In the first half our communication was lacking which gave Rancho a number of turn-overs. In the second half we started to play really hard defence, our communication was better and we were able to slow down the flow of points from the Rancho team. We tried hard right up to the end.” The quarter scores were: 9-22, 23-37, 37-57, 47-81.

The Varsity team had another great starting quarter. Jed Maher played his best game on tour which was great given his family were in the stands watching. Fatigue really set in tonight for the boys – they looked very tired late in the game and struggled to find points. However in the third quarter they rallied, like they have all tour, to get within 15 points of Rancho. We continued to struggle with our turn-overs due to the incredible pace and athleticism of the American game, which is very different back in Australia. Our bench players especially, with all the court time they have had, will benefit greatly from the experience and hopefully go into the final five CAS games has much stronger athletes.  Jaden Weldon commented after the game - "Everyone played hard. We were well in it in the first quarter, but we made too many turn overs in the second and Rancho got away from us. We've learnt to adapt our style play to the different speed played in America. To experience the strong presses and traps that the Americans play will take our game to a higher level. Overall, we have learnt so much.” The quarter scores were: 16-17, 16-35, 34-57, 44-71.

After each game Rancho put on a great taco meal for the boys and an opportunity for both teams to sit together and discuss their different countries and experiences – the boys loved it! After the Varsity game they were treated like rock stars by the Rancho community with people (mainly the girls) literally lining up for photos with them – it was quite incredible! Our sincere thanks to Bill Burke and the entire Rancho Cucamonga community for making our last school visit such an enjoyable one that will stay fondly in our memories.

Day 19 - Tuesday 20th December, 2011

The boys had an amazing day at Disneyland – as the motto states “The happiest place on earth!”

Our final tour dinner was held at ESPN World where we had an opportunity to reflect on the many positive experiences that we have had as a group and to acknowledge the outstanding achievements of all the boys.

Tonight’s NCAA College Basketball game between UCLA and UC Irvine didn’t achieve the same heights as the previous night’s NBA game, but it was great to have courtside seats, allowing the boys the opportunity to provide some 'constructive feedback' for the UC Irvine coaches and players.

Tomorrow we have our final games on tour against Rancho Cucamonga High School. We are still not sure if the games will be streamed live. Please refer to their school’s website at http://rchs-cjuhsd-ca.schoolloop.com/  just prior to the Varsity game to check, which commences at 6.30pm LA time.

Day 17 - Sunday 18th December, 2011

On our third Sunday in America the boys spent the day with their host families – their last opportunity to do so before our final four nights in hotels. Our sincere thanks to Head Coach, Chris Bohlen, and the parents and students of Wootton High School for making our games and final home stay in America such a wonderful experience.

The boys are having an early night tonight. We are up at 3.30am tomorrow morning for our flights to the final stop on our tour – LA!

We recently received copies of the West Point News which had a few articles about our time in West Point. Please see below.

Day 16 - Saturday 17th December, 2011

The Freshman team played The Heights Catholic School in their game as Wootton do not have a Freshman squad. Jayden Tanevski showed a mature approach to his game and was a threat from outside the three point line. Oscar Bradburn had his best game on tour, contributing well with some fast-break baskets. We looked better when we switched to a zone defence and denied Heights easy access to the hoop. The team definitely improved again at both ends of the court, even though we lost by 10 in the end. Connor Orr commented - "We limited our turnovers which is something we have been struggling with on tour. This will greatly help us in our final game. Hi mum!" The quarter scores were: 5-21, 19-34, 29-44, 45-55.

In the JV game Zac Curran was outstanding with an extremely high outside shooting percentage. He was determined to run hard off screens to open himself up for some good looks at the basket. Michael Liu commented after the game - "We worked some good plays in the first quarter but our shots didn't fall. After half time Wootton's defence was strong which forced a lot of turnovers. Overall it was a good game, even though we lost. In our final game on tour we need to play harder defence and finish our shots." The quarter scores were: 6-11, 18-29, 29-42, 36-56.

Despite our Varsity team being absolutely exhausted, the commitment, effort and spirit they displayed was inspirational. They put up a great contest for the first three quarters before they ran out of gas. Their determination has remained strong throughout the tour, hungry for a win and even hungrier to be better Basketballers from the experience. Every opposition coach has commented on how hard the boys have played right up until the end of each game, which is incredibly impressive given they are playing under a NBA schedule without the first class travel. Julian Blaschka commented - "We tried hard throughout the game. Our talk was better and our intensity was up. We are tired, but no excuses. We worked hard but our shots wouldn't fall. We are determined to win our last game in LA." The quarter scores were: 7-10, 15-24, 28-39, 31-54.

After the games we had a wonderful meal and fellowship with our hosts from Wootton. We again experienced the warm and generous hospitality that has been evident throughout our time in America.

Day 15 - Friday 16th December, 2011

After buying bargains galore at an outlet centre in the morning, and a great pasta lunch en route, we were greeted like rock stars as we arrived at Urbana High School ( http://uhsmd.org/ ) for our eighth game on tour. We are a little worried about how the boys are going to cope when they arrive back home at Sydney Airport with there being no cheerleaders, no marching bands and no adoring fans to greet them as they get off the plane - back to reality!

In the Freshman game our coach, Mr White, commented on how proud he was with the team because of the continued improvement they have shown on tour, even with the narrow loss they had tonight. Liam Brown, being motivated by either his mum and sister watching from the stands or the extra attention he was given from the Urbana female students, scored some valuable points at the low post. However too many turn overs in the fourth quarter swindled our lead. Yu Zhe Zheng commented - "We had a slow start to the game. There was a lack of court awareness early in the first quarter, however we soon got into a rhythm and were able to create our plays and register points. In the end it was a very close game in which a few simple things could have easily turned the game around." The quarter scores were: 10-10, 14-23, 26-28, 37-39.

In the JV game we were blown away by Urbana's outside shooting. Our defence was good, however we could never get in the game with their shooting being so dominant. Lucas Catts commented after the game - "Our coach really inspired us prior to the game to put our best effort in for this game and to bring together everything we have learned so far on tour. Our defence was good which can be put down to our team approach really starting to gel. However Urbana had some outstanding three point shooters who were very consistent - this is where they scored most of their points. Although we unfortunately lost the game, we again learnt so much from the experience." The quarter scores were: 11-19, 17-32, 22-51, 33-68.

In front of a large and vocal home crowd, and with a number of Urbana supporters dressed as Steve Irwin, for the second game in a row the Varsity team got off to a great start. Unfortunately Liam Thomas injured his already bruised elbow and in the 10 minutes he was off Urbana went on a scoring spree and had a big lead at half time, which we couldn't claw back. For our remaining two games we really need all players to fire at the same time and show their true potential as a team. James Begley commented - "We played well in the first quarter but Urbana's intensity and speed really dominated us for the remainder of the game. For our last two games on tour we need to get into a rhythm and play our game." The scores: 12-15, 16-34, 21-48, 28-59.

We are very thankful to the students, staff and parents at Urbana High School for hosting us and making our visit to the school such an enjoyable one. We headed off late in the evening to Wootton High School for our final home stay on tour. With Bullis in the end unable to provide home stays, after five consecutive nights in hotels the boys were really looking forward to getting back to experiencing American family life.

Day 14 - Thursday 15th December, 2011

After a good night's sleep we departed on a 'tourist day' in Washington DC - first stop, The Capitol Building. We were very fortunate to have the Aid to the Senator of Arkansas, Dave West, as our personal guide. Dave use to be the Assistant Varsity Coach at Wootton High School (who we play on Saturday). After our tour of the different chambers we were given access to the Senate and House of Representatives galleries. A highlight was sitting in the Senate gallery as Senator John McCain (past Presidential candidate) was delivering a Bill on defence and then proceeded to banter with his fellow Senators on a recent tweet he made about the Russian elections and the criticism he then received from Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin about the adverse effects of his time in a Vietnam prison.

Dave organised for us to have lunch in the Senator's Dining Room. The boys were very respectful, as they were all day, especially with a Senator having a lunch meeting at the next table. We then visited the Lincoln Memorial, an option of exploring the Flight & Space Museum or the Natural History Museum, followed by shopping and dinner on the way home to our hotel.

Day 13 - Wednesday 14th December, 2011

After a 5.30am start we farewelled Boston and departed for Washington DC. Within minutes of our arrival at Ronald Reagan Airport we were taking snapshots outside The White House.

A quick stop for lunch then we arrived at The Bullis School ( http://www.bullis.org/ )for our seventh game on tour. Nestled in the beautiful and exclusive Maryland countryside, once we arrived at the school it took at least 15 minutes for our bus to actually find the Basketball stadium, so vast were the grounds.

The Freshman team found it hard to get into the game early but managed to claw back the deficit to eight points late in the game. Conor Karagiannis showed good court vision with some excellent passes that led to assists. Jake Gebron ran the floor hard and scored good points in transition. Max Peters commented - "We started slowly and didn't do the bread-and-butter Basketball very well. Our defensive effort was better this game but we still need to be more attentive to the offensive plays." The half scores were: 17-26, 34-43.

The Junior Varsity team started well with Lucas Catts scoring the first two points of the game. The boys kept the game alive in the first half by consistently hitting their shots. The second half was sound, and Jean-Paul El Tom was very good with his defence, but unfortunately our buckets didn't drop and Bullis ran away with the game. Joel Di Chiara commented - "It was a very physical game. We kept up with them in the first quarter but we let the game get away from us. Our defence and talk did lift in the third quarter, our effort was always there, and we are improving." The quarter scores were: 11-21, 22-38, 27-53, 38-69.

Our Varsity team came out in the opening minutes and really dominated Bullis - the first time they had done this all tour. We were up 16-5 at the end of the first quarter, however we allowed Bullis to find their rhythm in the second period and the momentum shifted. Liam Thomas played the game of the tour. He was a one man wrecking crew. After the game the Bullis coaches had nothing but praise for Liam, as did a College scout from Virginia who was in the stands. James Begley also continues to improve with each game as he gains more and more confidence. Dane Ristovski commented - "We had the strongest start we've had on tour, however in the second quarter we gave up too many turnovers which allowed Bullis to build their confidence and get back into the game. We came back fighting in the second half with good ball movement but we just couldn't match their range of shooting. Bullis were well drilled, quick and incredible shooters. Our effort was there throughout the game but we need to play smarter with better decision making against teams that apply this degree of pressure defence. The period scores were: 16-5, 18-27, 22-44, 34-70.

Day 12 - Tuesday 13th December, 2011

The boys had an opportunity in the morning to do some shopping. It was mentioned in the last post that the shops were too expensive and exclusive for their budgets. How wrong we were - it is amazing how teenage boys, with streets lined with stores like Gucci, Tiffany & Co, Armani, etc., can navigate their way to a half-price Nike store like ants to spilt sugar.

Our visit to Harvard allowed us time to stroll around the University village area before we attended the Harvard Basketball team training session. Harvard are a NCAA Division One team and are currently nationally ranked in the top 25. The boys sat in the stands mesmerized by the fluidity and intensity of the training session. We are very grateful to Coach Amaker for making it possible for the boys and staff to learn so much from the short time we were there.

Our games tonight were against Cathedral High School ( http://www.cathedralhighschool.net/ )who played a very fast and physical style of play in all games. In the Freshman game Oscar Bradburn was solid in his first starting game. Connor Orr was tough under the basket with some valuable points. Yu Zhe Zheng provided exceptional defensive pressure on Cathedral's point guard and Conor Karagiannis ran the floor hard. The game was a torrid physical affair, going into overtime with Cathedral coming away with a close win. Comments from Joel Giezekamp after the game - "We played a truly tense and tight match with the final three-pointer from Cathedral sealing their win. Our defence was solid, winning numerous rebounds from both ends. However we lacked the necessary speed on the ball and pace required to win. We still have the desire to improve and learn from our mistakes for our next game." The quarter and extra time scores were: 4-4, 8-8, 14-13, 20-20, 23-25.

In the Junior Varsity game Lucas Catts dominated the boards in the first half, scoring good points. Zac Curran really hustled well in defence and was a great ball distributor. Adrian Antalfy was also superb in defence with quick foot movement, and was also dynamic in offence. Michael Liu had an excellent opening period as one of the starting five. Erin Saricilar had some great looks at the basket from the outside and was a threat to the opposition. Overall we hustled and boxed out well, and handled the pressure late in the game to take the victory. Jonathan Webster commented - "We kept our heads, stuck to our game and it was a great win against very tough opposition." The quarter scores were: 7-5, 22-21, 33-29, 42-36.

Our Varsity team encountered a more structured style of play in their game against Cathedral, getting their first taste of the pace and athleticism of an inner city Boston high school. Julian Blaschka made some strong moves to the basket, including some solid pull-up jump shots. Liam Thomas battled hard against the incredible quickness of the Cathedral defence. Luke Tucker commented after the game - "We started with high expectations but our intensity was lacking early. We were shocked by the athletic ability and physicality of Cathedral and it was a great learning experience for the whole team." The quarter scores were: 9-19, 15-42, 27-53, 37-71.

Our sincere thanks to Cathedral's Athletic Director, Jimmy Lynch, for all his organisation in making our games possible, and the staff and students of Cathedral High School for being so warm and welcoming hosts. It will be sad to leave Boston early tomorrow morning - an incredibly beautiful city with so much to see but so little time. Next stop - DC!
